Stop the job-killing megamerger!

There was big news Tuesday in the T-Mobile/Sprint merger review process. We've been saying for months now that the merger will hurt workers and consumers. If approved, it would lead to the loss of 30,000 jobs, lower wages for workers across the whole wireless industry, and higher prices for customers. Hundreds of T-Mobile and Sprint workers signed a petition calling on regulators to reject the merger unless the companies make real commitments to protect jobs and respect our rights at work. And our message is breaking through.

At a press conference in Manhattan, attorneys general from 10 states including New York and California announced they'd filed a lawsuit in federal court to stop the merger. The New York Attorney General called the merger "exactly the sort of consumer-harming, job-killing megamerger our antitrust laws were designed to prevent."

Long time T-mobile Workers United member and Albuquerque NM employee Victoria Singer said, “The Attorneys General complaint is a great development! We’ve been fighting this type of mega-merger for many years. We must keep making our voices heard, especially on job security.”

CWA Vice President Dennis Trainor, who spoke at the press conference, said, "This is the first, critical step towards stopping these two corporate giants from gaining excessive market power at the expense of workers, customers, and communities."

This is good news, but the merger review process will continue, perhaps for several more months. While CWA President Chris Shelton applauded the attorneys general for taking the action, he pointed out that some regulators have not weighed in yet. He said the lawsuit would "send a signal to the U.S. Department of Justice to take strong action to enforce our nation’s antitrust laws."
